Neighborhoods Council Fights Ride-Hailing Companies on Ballot Measure

As Uber and Lyft pour millions into campaign, groups speak out against corporate proposals

Stating plainly that "corporations should not dictate local regulations in Austin," the Austin Neighborhoods Council Executive Committee has pulled no punches in its resolution against a proposition that would roll back regulations on Uber, Lyft, and other ride-hailing companies, the Austin American-Statesman reported today.

The paper's Alberta Phillips notes that ANC's resolution, which was put into record on April 13, lists safety concerns as well as that "corporate power and money" are being used to counteract regulations decided by publicly elected officials in a transparent fashion.

Last week, The Austin Chronicle's Michael King reported that Uber and Lyft had spent "in excess of $2 million" underwriting Ridesharing Works for Austin's campaign in favor of the proposition. The group recently hired former mayor Lee Leffingwell to lead its charge.

The ballot goes before voters on May 7.
