Even the most casual Austin architecture fan is familiar with Lake/Flato, the San Antonio-based firm responsible for so many innovative residences and public buildings in our area—from Hotel San Jose to work on the new Austin Public Library building. While it might not be a huge surprise, it's nevertheless impressive that the company, according to the Austin Business Journal, just received a 2016 American Institute of Architects Housing Award for its stunning Lake Austin Hog Pen Creek Retreat.
The home, which was featured on Curbed.com in March, as well as in Dwell magazine, won in the One- and Two-Family Custom Residences category. Lake/Flato, which opened an Austin office not terribly long ago, sited the home in a way that preserved all the trees on the property and takes advantage of breezes on our many, um, warm days. It connects to the outdoors in many other ways. It is also, as the AIA site notes, strongly tied to place, suiting its setting perfectly.
