A Look at the New Micro-Apartments Headed for the Eastside

The Indie complex targets millennials with compact living units in popular entertainment area

Indie Apartments, a new micro-unit development that we presume is aimed at indie-millennials, is on its way to one of that cohort's favorite playgrounds. Transwestern Development Company announced last week that it will build the "micro-unit community" at 1648 East Sixth Street. The complex, which will be on a lot that measures just under half an acre, will have 139 rental and a 2,500-square-foot restaurant space.

The lot is on the block of East Sixth between Chalmers and Comal, along with Liberty Bar and Qui, and one block from The Grackle.

The 55,814-square-foot property will feature 350-square-foot studio units and 520-square-foot, two-bedroom units. Apartments will be fully furnished, with space-saving built-in storage units and flexible furniture systems such as Murphy beds, hideaway kitchen modules, and convertible tables.

Transwestern, a regional development company with projects in the South and Southwest, will also be developing the Arnold, a two-building, 445,952-square-foot project directly across the street from Indie Apartments. The Arnold will include a 94,500-square-foot office building and 350 multifamily units with 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and restaurant space.

The company materials report that office building, located at 1645 East Sixth Street, is completely leased and that The Arnold apartments will begin leasing this month. It plans to break ground on the Indie in June 2016 and have its first units available in August 2017.
