Austin Has the Third Most Bikeable Downtown in the Country

We're number three, according to recent study

Austin has the third most bikeable downtown in the country, according real estate brokerage company Redfin. In honor of Bike to Work Week, the company recently looked at U.S. cities' Bike Score ratings, one of the data services it provides, to come up with its list of top 10 most bikeable downtowns.

Austin came in third, behind Philadelphia's Center City West and El Presidio in Downtown Tucson. The company attributed our high ranking to the city's Transportation Department and its focus on connecting bike and pedestrian lanes. Mayor Steve Adler weighed in as well, noting that having protected bike paths downtown has increased biker safety and relieves traffic congestion.

The ranking is interesting in light of the city's "Vision Zero" plan to eliminate traffic deaths by the year 2025. Despite some council members' seeming concern that the plan's emphasis on bicyclist and pedestrian safety would create impediments to cars, the council approved the plan at its meeting Thursday.
