Sophisticated Dawson Contemporary Showcases High Design in Vibrant Neighborhood

Matt Fajkus Architecture's South Austin home riffs on different decades in brilliant ways

This elegant modern home was designed by local Matt Fajkus Architecture, which consistently turns out some of the sophisticated, inspiring home design in town.

Built in 2014, the 2,764-square-foot Dawson residence has three bedrooms, two and half baths, and office and a second living room. MF Architecture's innovative and sustainable approach is apparent throughout, where steel and glass are used to create an indoor-outdoor flow.

There's a huge master bedroom closet and bath, and tongue-in-groove wood ceilings, but the things we appreciate most are contemporary twists on historic designs: the mid-mod-style half-wall planter and 70s sunken living room, rendered in concrete, or the slightly trippy optical illusions created by the wood-blocked stairs and kitchen backsplash.

MF also has a way of using landscaping/hardscaping to allow privacy in big-windowed, light-filled spaces like bathrooms and bedrooms. All this within easy distance of a hopping area on South First Street, oh yes. The home is on the market for $915,000.
