Reinvented Midcentury Home in Highland Park West Asks $1.69M

Refreshing remodel of 1958 house shows inventiveness and flair

We don't love every single thing about this complete overhaul of a 1958 family home (see: Craftsman-style door, diamond-shaped windows), but it scores big for refashioning a house of its vintage into a wholly different, utterly contemporary style that works beautifully with the existing footprint.

The 3,228-square-foot home will especially appeal to fans of loft-style living (there are still many of us) with its way-open-plan main living area. The huge, light-filled room is of the style that used to be called a "great room" before that term fell out of fashion; it has soaring ceilings and enough unimpeded space to fly a model plane through and is divided into distinct kitchen, dining, lounging, and office areas connected by its design.

The home has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a separate media room, and a backyard deck. Located in the established Highland Park West neighborhood, it's surrounded by mature oaks on a tree-lined street not far from Mount Bonnell and Lake Austin.
