Dias de los Muertos—holidays during which events to commemorate the dead and celebrate their (and all) lives, originated in Mexico but now observed in much of North, Central, and South America—takes place Oct. 29 through Nov. 2 this year. Mexic-Arte Museum will host its 34th annual Viva la VIda procession and festival on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The festival is both the largest and longest-running of its kind in Austin. This year, as in years past, it will include a Grand Procession, an Education Pavilion with hands-on art activities and artist demos, and a celebration with traditional foods, local artist and retail booths, a low-rider exhibition, live music, and performances throughout the day. The 2016 festival saw 100,000 attendees, and the museum expects more this year.

Needless to say, some street closures will be necessary to bring Downtown’s streets alive with celebration. Via the Downtown Austin Alliance, here are closures and a parade map.
