Apartments, cottages, and a full-on tiny house in neighborhoods from South Lamar to the Domain

Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, a column that explores what one can rent for a set dollar amount in various Austin neighborhoods. Is one person's studio another person's townhouse? Let's find out! Today's price: $1,200.

4305 Caswell Avenue, one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage, 500 square feet, $1,200/month. This Hancock neighborhood home, built in 1936, looks like it might be the elusive “garage apartment” that rarely pops up on rental listings anymore. However, it’s difficult to tell if there is another house on the property. At any rate, it “overlooks” a backyard, has hardwood floors, and is quite conveniently located. No pets.

8310 Bowling Green Drive, two-bedroom, two-bathroom duplex, 2,100 square feet, $1,200/month. This Wooten duplex looks to have the original style of its 1967 origins. It has a one-car carport, washer-dryer connections, and a fenced yard. No pets.

IMT @ The Domain, 3001 Esperanza Xing, one-bedroom, one-bathroom studio apartment, 702 square feet, $1,200/month. The Domain Northside studio unit features granite countertops, wine racks, hardwood-style plank flooring, and stainless studio or black appliances. The location is, obviously, convenient to the Domain, and the complex has a pool, gym, and other community amenities. It’s pet-friendly, with no weight restrictions, and has an onsite dog park.

2600 East Fourth Street, one-bedroom, one-bathroom studio cottage, 225 square feet, $1,200/month plus $150/month for utilities/internet. Those who want to try tiny living in East Austin might enjoy this furnished cottage in the Holly neighborhood. Yes, the bedroom is also the kitchen, but it has a full-sized refrigerator and a microwave, and the bathroom looks recently renovated, with a decent-sized shower.

3737 Keats Drive, two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment, 870 square feet, $1,200/month. A South Lamar apartment in the 1980-built Creek Village Apartments, this unit looks to have received recent updates and is walking distance of many South Lamar Boulevard attractions. Pet policy: No breed or weight restrictions with fees and $20/month extra rent.
