Here’s what $175K buys around Austin

A surprising array of condos and houses

Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, a column that explores what one can rent or buy for a set dollar amount in various Austin neighborhoods. Is one person’s studio another person’s Shangri-la? Let’s find out! Today’s price: $175,000 or under.

The still-affordable housing in Far South Austin has been attracting more home-hunters lately, and sweet, small condos such as this one are probably part of the reason. Located off William Cannon just north of Cherry Creek, the second-floor one-bedroom has a separate, office-style space that could in theory be a second bedroom but more practically could serve as a guest room/area or office. It has stainless appliances and a private balcony and wants $111,900 plus $195/month HOA fees.

The listing calls this two-bedroom, two-bathroom house a “modern cottage,” but the single-family home, at 1,020 square feet, is fairly roomy as cottages go. Located in the Chaparral Crossing subdivision a bit east of Hornsby Bend, it has community amenities, private parking, and front-yard landscaping included in the $30/month HOA fee. It’s on the market for $172,000.

An updated, boutique complex in Windsor Park retains a kind of midcentury vibe, although the interior of this one-bedroom condo is all sleek and contemporary. The one-bedroom home measures 675 square feet and is on the market for $175,00 plus HOA dues of $200/month. It has off-street parking and a covered patio, is pet-friendly, and is quite convenient to Mueller development amenities as well as those if its immediate neighborhood.

Southeast Austin turns up a single-family home, a bit of a fixer, asking $170,000. The one-story, ranch-style home in an established neighborhood has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, a fenced yard, and a two-car garage and is close to major traffic arteries including William Cannon Drive and Pleasant Valley Road.

A remodeled condo in a generally well-kept, quiet, fenced Allandale complex, this one-bedroom unit asking $165,000 has laminate and tile flooring throughout. stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and a washer/dryer. It’s also close to the dining, shopping, and other attractions on Burnet Road and Anderson Lane but sheltered from the hustle and bustle on a winding road behind all the action.
