Weekend street closures: Kite Fest, Texas Independence Parade

In advance of the start of what the city calls “Spring Festival Season” aka SXSW, this weekend sees two events with modest road closures but a fair amount of spectacle.

Texas Independence Day Parade

On Saturday morning, Celebrate Texas Independence Day will put on a parade (to celebrate Texas Independence Day, of course. The festive march down North Congress Avenue looks to involve various high school bands; floats from state, city, and heritage organizations; and healthy amount of period costuming. Road closures are as follows, courtesy of the Downtown Austin Alliance.

Saturday, March 3

7:30 AM to 11:00 AM

CONGRESS AVENUE, ANN RICHARDS BRIDGE

Between Riverside Drive and Cesar Chavez Street

The bridge will close at 5:00 am and reopen at 11:00 am.

CONGRESS AVENUE

Between Cesar Chavez Street and 11th Street

11TH STREET

Between Brazos Street and Lavaca Street

CESAR CHAVEZ, 2ND, 3RD, 4TH, 5TH, 6TH, 7TH, 8TH, 9TH 10TH STREETS

(Partial Closure)

Between Brazos Street and Colorado Street

Local traffic will be allowed to access destinations in the 100 block east and the 100 block west of all Congress Avenue cross streets.

CESAR CHAVEZ STREET

Between Guadalupe Street and Lavaca Street

Westbound lanes will remain open.

11TH STREET

(Partial Closure)

Between Brazos Street and San Jacinto Boulevard

Eastbound lanes will remain open.

12TH, 13TH, 14TH STREETS

Between Brazos Street and Lavaca Street

BRAZOS STREET

Between 12th Street and 15th Street

ABC Kite Fest

On Sunday, the much beloved and long-lived (88 years and counting) ABC Kite Fest (also known as the Zilker Kite Fest)ival takes place in Zilker Park. The family-friendly event has day-long activities for all ages, including the traditional kite flying contest and showcase, a fun run, and MossFest, a children’s music concert.
