Dazed & Confused, the stoner classic directed by Richard Linklater and filmed in Austin, turns 25 this year. But for generations of fans, much like the high-school girls David Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey) keeps his eye on in the movie, it never gets old.
Those fans will no doubt turn out in force for the upcoming Alamo Drafthouse event that will be held to celebrate the anniversary. On August 24, the theater’s Rolling Roadshow team, the Austin Film Society, and the Austin Parks Department will present a screening of the film at the Zilker Park moonlight tower in a reenactment (sort of) of the iconic “party at the moon tower” scene that takes place in the movie on the night of the last day of school for the students of the fictional Lee High in 1976.
While there will be no climbing of the tower as in the movie (a scene actually shot on a set built to look like the top of a tower but much closer to the ground), there will be a pre-party starting at 6 p.m., with live music, food vendors, and a cash bar (as well as a Kendra Scott pop-up shop because why not?). The Alamo will supply the usual movie-themed interactive props and flair.
Richard Linklater and cast and crew members not yet specified will be in attendance for the one-off event. The screening begins at sundown, and parking at Zilker will be free, but guests should arrive early to nab the best viewing spots (and, of course, to enjoy the preparty). You don’t have to bring your own chair, but there won’t be any provided, so it would be a lot cooler if you did.
