Construction the new HOPE Outdoor Gallery has begun. The facility in Carson Creek, about 10 miles from Downtown Austin, will be the new home of the graffiti park on Baylor Street, which for six-plus years has been a venue for spontaneous street art of all kinds and a draw for locals and visitors alike.
The new gallery is expected to open next spring. The Baylor Street location will be shutting down in October rather than the originally announced June 2018 date. Removal of the current site was approved earlier this year, with the full endorsement of the HOPE Foundation, which manages the gallery. The gallery initially “opened” in 2010 on a demolished building site in the Clarksville neighborhood and grew to be so popular with artists and the public that it has outgrown its location.
The privately owned site is also prime real estate, just west of downtown and a block from possibly the busiest retail strip on North Lamar Boulevard, so it was widely understood that it would eventually be developed. The site’s developers, Mid-City, will work with HOPE on features to make sure the art park continues to be recognized, including public art spaces programmed by HOPE to be included in the new development and the preservation of preserve a memorial piece of the Baylor Street walls to be transported to Carson Creek Ranch.
