Take in the landscape: Austin Outdoor Living Tour preview

How to stay cool in the face of the summer swelter

We’ll have just passed the summer solstice when the Austin Outdoor Living Tour starts Saturday. Astronomically speaking, it’s the start of summer and, although we know our senses (or the thermometer) might tell us something different, it’s still a good time to see what landscape designers have on offer to help us enjoy the season in lovely fashion, even as the swelter approaches.

This is the first year for the tour, which is put on by the Modern Architecture and Design Society (also organizers and hosts of the yearly Austin Modern Home Tour). Organization founder James Leasure said the upcoming event is a “lighter, shorter” version of that one but will nevertheless offer participants a chance to speak with some of the city’s top designers and get a good idea of what they can do—as well as being inspired about sprucing up their own spaces.

The self-guided tour will take participants to private homes in various parts of town, including Brentwood, Tarrytown, East Austin, Rollingwood, Northwest Hills, and Lake Austin estates. Native Edge, Mark Odom Studio, Moontower, and Austin Outdoor Design are some of the featured designers.
