European flair in South Austin

Maplevale
Photos by Brian Cole

This eye-catching two-story home has been a South Austin standout since it was built in 2013. It’s been dubbed “Maplevale” by its creators at local design-build firm Spaller|Glover, which specializes in storybook homes with an old-world European bent and is known for its distinctive details and emphasis on craftsmanship.

In the case of Maplevale, those one-of-kind details include large handcrafted doors, custom-shaped metal windows, arches, a clay tile roof, the window lintels, and slightly quirky but functional built-in features and spaces. The stone walls and clay-tile roof create an old-world look—unusual for its Zilker neighborhood—combining Mediterranean, Hill Country, and European rural styles in a way that reads harmonious and serene.

Inside the 2,557-square-foot home, we find with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. There are also two living areas with such details as a built-in bar cabinet and bookshelves, a formal dining room, a kitchen with marble countertops and custom cabinets, a home office, and hardwood floors throughout the house.

Off the kitchen is a large screened porch with Saltillo tile flooring, recessed lighting, ceiling fans, and party lights. It looks out over the pool and lush yard, which features a number of heritage elms and a series of gardens designed and installed by Xylem Organic Gardening.

Located at 1606 Hether Street, Maplevale is on the market for $1,725,000. The listing is held by Eileen Gill at Compass.
